Letters from Am Farmer

In 1782, J. Hector St John de Crevecoeur (Michel Guillaume Jean de Crevecoeur) published a volume of narrative essays called Letters from an American sodbuster. In these narratives Crevecoeur noted that the colonial cultures were not what he had imagined. He felt that an American would leave behind what they knew and believed from the home terra firma and start anew in America by embracing the cultures of this country. Some of these culture changes he felt would be kindred included religion and social precondition. Upon his return to Europe in 1782, Crevecoeur wrote these narratives to show the people of Europe the incompatible cultures and lifestyles of the American people. This gave Europeans a firsthand look of the lives in America.
Religion and social status are the two most prominent items Crevecoeur wrote about in his narratives. In the 1730s evangelicalism came through the colonies, starting in impudently England and moving to the Lower South colonies by the 1770s.
