OSMOSIS IN POTATO CELLS INVESTIGATION

Introduction

The aim of this investigation is to record the effect of varying dilutions of atomic number 11 chloride resolvent on sections of potatoes and ascertaining the amount of osmotic activity amid the two.

The independent variable is varying the range of concentrations by diluting the 1M solution of sodium chloride. The dependant variable is measuring the mass of the potato.

The variables that were unplowed constant were to use the same potato, cutting identical pitch and length of potato sections and use the same electronic scales.

Prediction
It was predicted that when change magnitude the concentration of sodium chloride, the mass of the potato should decrease. This is because the potato has a higher water potential than the solution.

Water molecules move from a region of high concentration to low concentration, therefore the water moves out of the potato cubicles and consequently it will decrease in mass. In 0 molar or very low common salt concentrations then the opposite should happen. The solution has higher water potential compared with the potato, therefore the water will move into the potato cells, increasing its mass.

Water molecules will continue to diffuse into the salt solution until it reaches equal concentrations on either side of the membrane, attain a state of equilibrium.
