The One Act Plays The Protest by Norman Williams and The venture of Dreams by John Hughes have many similar themes. The daughter sees the Japanese tradition as ancient and barbaric and yearns to be free. She wishes to have equal luck as men and have the freedom to choose her married man but the father rejects her westernized views.
