While the main character tries to use religion to provided herself, the antagonist questions it. The first character in the store is the grandmother. She is an evil woman who comes off immediately as selfish and unthinking of other people and their own desires. She is also super disingenuous and oblivious of events happening around her such as the close of her own grandchildren and son. Using her consumption to nab what she wants, she ultimately destroys the lives of herself and her family by taking them literally down the wrong path. She is not an extremely religious person, but at the end of the story, she uses religion in a way to try to save herself from the Misfit and achieves grace costly before he shoots her. With being selfish, the grandmother isn’t the take up woman in the world and just before s he is shot, she realizes that selfishness and use will not always work and that other may need to be reached out to and might need help. “The grandmothers inquiry cleared for an instant.”(p.10). The will of others might outweigh her own and that no matter how hard she tries in the end, she will not provoke what she wants this time with the Misfit.

Selfishness and manipulation are subjects that can be stool when analysing the grandmother. The character of the Misfit serves as the antagonist. He assists the grandmother with her transformation. He is an morose man who, by decision the grandmothers life, assists her by making her a better person in death. “‘ She would of been a unsloped woman,’ ! The Misfit said, ‘if it had been individualistic there to shoot her every minute of her life.’” (p. 10). When he shoots the grandmother, the Misfit becomes the veracious man that the grandmother said was hard to find.
