The Beginnings of Track Star Steve Prefontaine

Pre concept this arrangement was unfair on the athletes. Pre felt if he had to finance his own training and transportation, he should be in a position to decide what events he competed in. His comments had been how the AAU doesn't care about American athletes and that he did not care within the AAU. Pre dared the AAU to consume him to court. Steve Prefontaine was a visionary. He saw the must set up national training camps supported by the AAU, or big business, or other interested groups to aid American athletes. He saw that unless amateur athletes were paid anything they would have no option but to jobs rather than train. This would weaken them as competitors. He saw a time when individuals would not care if runners have been amateurs or professionals. He believed that what individuals cared about was speed as well as the capability to win races and not whether a runner was considered being a professional because he was sponsored by a shoe manufacturer or paid to run.

The pace for your very first half of the race was far slower than Pre wanted. At that point, the race turned into a test exactly where Pre's skills as being a runner would be challenged by the methods from the other runners. Pre tried to eat the lead several times. Every time, he was boxed in by another runner. Rick Reilley says in Sports Illustrated that Pre he ran in fourth place and did not receive an Olympic medal, but this race is still remembered as getting one of the most useful 5000-meter races in the history with the Olympics (88).

Steve Prefontaine died inside early morning hours of Friday May perhaps 30, 1975. Following stopping at a bar that night to visit friends, he went to a party at a friend's home. In accordance with a few of the guests at that party, he drank about six beers in about two hours. He then drove 2 buddies home. On his way home, Pre's was in an accident. His car flipped over, pinning him underneath. The sports car was equipped having a roll bar, but Pre was not wearing his seat belt.
